Founded in 1914, The Risk Management Association (RMA) is a not-for-profit, member-driven professional association whose sole purpose is to advance the use of sound risk principles in the financial services industry. RMA promotes an enterprise approach to risk management that focuses on credit risk, market risk, and operational risk.
Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, RMA has approximately 3,000 institutional members that include banks of all sizes as well as nonbank financial institutions. They are represented in the association by 18,000 risk management professionals who are chapter members in financial centers throughout North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific.
The Richmond Chapter, like all RMA chapters, is organized and run by volunteer members. We strongly encourage current or prospective members to become involved in shaping the future direction of the chapter by contacting any of the current officers or committee chairs. We would also be happy to discuss the many benefits that can be derived from membership in RMA.
The Richmond Chapter of RMA traces its roots back to October 20, 1921. The chapter became inactive during the Great Depression, but was re-established as the Carolinas-Virginias Chapter in early 1945.
Over the years, the Carolinas-Virginias Chapter flourished. In the summer of 1980, the Richmond Chapter of RMA became the first official sub-chapter of the Carolinas–Virginias Chapter. In 1979, National RMA adopted a plan to form local groups that could serve major population centers within chapters, Richmond became the first local RMA chapter in the country.
Over the years, several Richmond members have achieved prominence at the National RMA level. Former National RMA presidents include Carlisle R. Davis, State-Planters Bank & Trust Co. (1944), and Edward F. Gee, State-Planters Bank & Trust Co. (1954). Preston T. Holmes (1976) and James C. Harlan (1985) are former recipients of National RMA’s Distinguished Service Award.
During the 1980’s, a few large banks that were very involved in leading the new chapter to success dominated the Richmond Chapter. The chapter was very traditional but independent. Over the years, it established good educational programs for its members. Popular annual meetings such as the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank President’s Breakfast, which still exists today, were established. The 1990’s not only brought big-bank consolidation, but also a growing number of smaller community banks entered the market. As a result, educational needs increased and the board of directors became more diversified. The Richmond Chapter rose to the challenge by establishing in-house educational programs as well as holding meetings/programs outside the city to accommodate a diverse and growing membership.
Today, the Richmond Chapter still enjoys an active and dedicated membership committed to providing networking opportunities for area financial services professionals, as well as educational programs designed for success in changing economic times. We have developed other programs that target specific segments in the banking industry. These include Women in Banking which was established in 1999 and The Young Professionals Group which was re-established in 2002. An annual golf outing and scholarship program are other examples of the Richmond Chapter’s diverse growth and commitment to its members and community.
