Preparing for the Presidency
As you ascend the ladder to the chair of your RMA Chapter, think of each rung of the ladder as an opportunity to prepare for reaching the summit.
Plug into RMA HQ and the Chapters Unit. Participate in the teleconferences on membership and programming. Acquaint yourself with the resources that are available to assist you.
Use the RMA Chapters Info section of the Web site. Visit often and search for programming and leadership tips. Use the discussion forum to solicit ideas from other Chapter leaders.
Get to know the local officers, board, and committee chairs—these people will be your team for your term as chair. Note the strengths and talents of the individuals involved and consider how you can use them so they will be effective.
Consider volunteering to serve as committee liaison with key committees, i.e., programs, membership, etc., to assist the current local chairman in keeping up with how the committees' initiatives are being carried out and to better acquaint yourself with the individuals involved. Your follow-up contact will present you as someone who expects results.
Review the team—officers, board, and committees. Is there a change you will make next year? Is there a need to involve others? Lay the groundwork for your RMA year.
Plan to involve all board members in an active role. Set the expectation that board members be involved in leading a committee or planning a program.
Work with the chairman in laying the groundwork for the next year. Play an active role in the late winter planning meeting for the upcoming year.
Make a preliminary plan: list some goals and objectives for your year as RMA Chapter leader.
Set up your RMA co-sponsored MENTOR and Lending To… programs. These courses are scheduled by March of the year preceding your year as leader.
Take the opportunity to be involved in a Regional Chapter meeting to get to know others outside your own Chapter. Investigate the resources the Regional Chapter can offer.
