I’ve been in the financial services industry for 33 years. I was first introduced to RMA by a work associate who invited me to attend an RMA luncheon in Dallas. In addition to attending luncheons, I also had the opportunity to attend RMA educational classes. After a period of involvement with the North Texas Chapter, I was asked to join the North Texas Chapter Board of Directors and served as a director for six years.
RMA has helped my career by providing educational, as well as networking, opportunities. Over the years, I have attended many educational classes, luncheons, forums, and conferences. These events have helped me to stay current on constantly changing banking regulations and also have helped to nurture my credit skills. After many years in lending, I decided to change to the credit side of the business. The knowledge I gained from RMA over the years helped with my transition to a Chief Credit Officer position with a local Dallas bank and to my current position as Senior Credit Officer with First United Bank.
As a manager, I promote RMA’s resources within my team. My bank uses RMA eMentor for industry information in our credit memos. In addition, I typically invite a work associate to attend RMA luncheons with me. Most significantly, we made a strategic decision as a bank last year to partner with RMA to provide in-house training courses for our officers and credit analysts. We have hosted five RMA courses in-house in the last 12 months and have an additional two courses scheduled later in 2015. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback on the courses from our attendees.
Over the years, I have made many business acquaintances and friends through RMA. There are a number of people I can call or email to compare practices or to get an opinion on an issue. It has been helpful to discuss best practices with other bankers. I like to attend RMA conferences because they are not only a great learning experience, but are also a great networking opportunity. In addition, I read the RMA Member Forum email every day. There are always relevant, interesting topics and the Forum on the RMA Xchange provides a great online arena for members to have discussions.
