Chief Compliance Officer Roundtable

Compliance risk continues to increase as banks navigate the current environment. New interpretations of existing guidelines, proposed regulatory changes, accelerated pace of product innovation, and changes in consumer preferences create a challenging environment for compliance teams.

Each RMA Roundtable event agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by the attendee’s recommendations in advance of the meeting. However, topics will likely include:

  • Review major compliance risks and critical regulations, such as the Bank Secrecy Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and navigate other regulations
  • Implementing proactive compliance risk management programs
  • Metrics/tools for measuring program effectiveness and efficiency
  • Identifying compliance red flags and hot topics
  • Monitoring employee actions and communication
  • Use of data in criminal investigations
  • Board reporting

This invite-only event is specific to Chief Compliance Officers, Heads or Directors of Compliance, and their delegates only. For questions about this event, or if interested in attending, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org for consideration.

Community Bank Enterprise Risk Management Forum

Risk Management is not the same at all financial institutions, nor should it be. Community-sized banks (or those with less than $10 billion in managed assets) have finite resources to address a mounting list of risks. Some community banks may even lack a bona fide Chief Risk Officer position, but risk management must still be established and continue to mature. This forum is for director- or manager-level risk professionals looking to establish or further their non-financial risk management program, especially those banks who are approaching the Frank-Dodd thresholds, which brings more stringent and complicated standards. This roundtable will cover broad risk governance practices (risk culture, organization, roles and responsibilities, policies, and risk technology), as well as leading practices in the risk process (risk appetite, identifying and assessing, response/treatment, monitoring, and reporting).

Each RMA peer-sharing event agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by the event’s steering committee (peer banks) and the attendee’s recommendations in advance of the meeting. However, topics will likely include:

  • Introductions and Networking
  • Implementing an ERM Framework
  • Ways to measure and enhance ERM’s program maturity
  • Reporting methodologies and key metrics
  • Opportunities to invest and improve the data, analytics, and insights required to manage risk and resiliency at a community bank
  • Risk and control assessment techniques and reporting that matters

This event is targeted at director and manager-level, risk management professionals in community banks. For more event details or to register for the next published event, see our Event Calendar.  For questions, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org

Community Bank Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Risk Forum

This forum explores the non-financial risks and risk management techniques for the environmental/climate, social, and governance factors impacting Community Banks (or those with less than $10 billion in managed assets). ESG and related practices are receiving increased focus from customers, investors, rating agencies, and regulators. As a result, ESG risk management practices are in the preliminary stages of implementation or enhancement. Navigating through new regulations and reporting requirements is challenging for smaller teams.

This forum offers a valuable opportunity to meet and discuss these challenges with your peers and network.  A unique feature of RMA’s peer-sharing events is that each agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by the attendee’s recommendations. Topics will likely include:

  • Learning the roles and responsibilities of ESG programs and teams at other institutions
  • Improving knowledge, governance, and culture for ESG-related risks
  • Risk management process techniques for ESG risks (identifying, assessing, prioritizing, and treating)
  • Creating ESG key indicators and metrics to monitor
  • Communicating, escalating, and reporting ESG intelligence
  • Discussing emerging ESG risks and regulatory interest
  • ESG disclosure standards and best practices
  • ESG elements to select and assess third parties
  • Reporting methodologies and key metrics

This forum is targeted at professionals working or governing ESG activities and will be held virtually for your convenience. For more event details or to register for the next published event, see our Event Calendar.  For questions, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org

Culture & Conduct Risk Forum

As institutions continue their journey through the pandemic and navigate other emerging risks, the emphasis on culture and conduct in banking is not slowing down. Boards and senior management focus on demonstrating effective management, measurement, and oversight of culture and conducts. Stakeholders realize that poor culture (e.g., misconduct) may lead to financial and reputational consequences. To properly monitor culture, senior executives focus to identify meaningful metrics that link back to the overall strategy and risk appetite.

This forum offers a valuable opportunity to meet and discuss these challenges with your peers and identify best practices you can leverage at your institution to enhance the value of your framework for managing culture, conduct violations, and ties to reputation risk. A unique feature of RMA’s peer-sharing events is that each agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by the attendee’s recommendations. However, topics will likely include:

  • Awareness of culture and conduct regulatory expectations and trends
  • Leading practices in communicating desired culture and behaviors
  • Data aggregation and analytics techniques
  • Risk training curriculum
  • Reputational risk components
  • Managing incidents like improper sales practices or use of non-bank approved communications
  • Governance risk and compliance tools

For more event details or to register for the next published event, see our Event Calendar.  For questions, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org

Head of Operational Risk Management Roundtable

Regulators have identified three critical operational risks that are interconnected: cyber-security, the ongoing digitization of banking services, and the use of third parties to deliver critical services.

Operational risk leaders focus on covering the risk of loss from information system failures and business disruptions, human error and fraud, business process and product design defects, and legal challenges.  This peer-sharing forum is a great opportunity to share best practices, technologies, emerging threats, and solutions for this complex area of banking.

Each RMA peer-sharing event agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by the event’s steering committee (peer banks) and the attendee’s recommendations in advance of the meeting. However, topics will likely include:

  • Identification of Major Operational Risks
  • Roles & Responsibilities: Credible Challenge
  • Governance responsibilities: board oversight and reporting
  • Operational Resilience
  • Change Management
  • Mitigation of Risks Associated with New Emerging Threats
  • Operational Risk Management
  • Operational Risk Measurement
  • Interconnectivity of Risks
  • Risk Acceptance

Some of these topics are part of the Operational Risk Discussion Group and other peer-sharing agendas. The dialog at this roundtable will focus on the perspective from the second line of defense, specifically from the point of view of the Head/Director of ORM.

This event is held twice a year. The target audience includes heads of, directors, and management-level professionals working in operational risk management, their delegates, or ORM oversight, in financial institutions with $30+ billion in assets.  If interested in attending, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org for consideration.

Incentive Compensation Forum

Incentive compensation programs are important tools for financial institutions. These arrangements serve several objectives including attracting and retaining skilled labor, promoting better performance, and allowing an organization to better control costs while increasing profit.

If not designed properly, however, compensation arrangements can provide executives and employees with incentives to take imprudent risks that may not be consistent with the long-term health of the organization. Poorly designed incentive programs can inadvertently reward employees, contractors, and service providers for unethical behavior or other unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices.

This roundtable offers a valuable opportunity to meet and discuss these challenges with your peers and identify best practices you can leverage at your institution to enhance the value of your incentive compensation/reward programs. A unique feature of RMA’s Roundtables is that each event agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by a steering committee with your peers and with the attendee’s recommendations. However, topics will likely include:

  • sound practice in incentive compensation management
  • incentive compensation regulatory expectations and trends
  • incentive plan governance
  • employee performance assessment tools & processes (e.g., scorecard improvements)
  • improving talent-related challenges like attraction and retention of employees

This event is held twice a year. The target audience includes management-level professionals working in human resources and experts creating or overseeing the bank’s compensations and reward program.  For more event details or to register for the next published event, see our Event Calendar.  For questions, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org

Large Bank Enterprise Risk Management Roundtable

Despite the increased focus on Enterprise Risk Management, many in the financial services industry struggle to precisely define it. This roundtable will cover broad risk governance practices (risk culture, organization, roles and responsibilities, policies, and risk technology) as well as leading practices in the risk process (risk appetite, identifying and assessing, response/treatment, monitoring, and reporting). ERM directors or managers should join to better enrich their second-line programs by learning and sharing practices with other national and multi-national financial institutions (or those with more than $70billion in managed assets).

  • Enhancing the overall ERM Framework, better coordinating with other risk disciplines (i.e., Compliance and Audit)
  • Ways to measure and enhance ERM’s program maturity
  • Reporting methodologies and key metrics
  • Opportunities to invest and improve the data, analytics, and insights required to manage risk and resiliency at a community bank
  • Risk and control assessment techniques and reporting that matters

Mid-Tier Bank Enterprise Risk Management Roundtable

Despite the increased focus on Enterprise Risk Management, many in the financial services industry struggle to precisely define it. This roundtable will cover broad risk governance practices (risk culture, organization, roles and responsibilities, policies, and risk technology) as well as leading practices in the risk process (risk appetite, identifying and assessing, response/treatment, monitoring, and reporting). ERM Directors or Managers should join to better enrich their second-line programs by learning and sharing practices with other mid-tier financial institutions (or those with approximately $10 billion to $70billion in managed assets).

Risk Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) Forum

Risk Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) is a process by which management and staff of all levels collectively identify and evaluate risks and associated controls. There isn’t a person in your organization that has not heard of RCSA, since each RCSA entity must identify the operational risks arising from its products and activities. Nowadays, many financial institutions consider RCSA to be purely a compliance exercise and do not see benefits that can be derived by successfully implementing an effective RCSA process. As a reason, one of the top priorities for many banks is to re-focus their RCSA approaches.

Each RMA event agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by the attendee’s recommendations in advance of the meeting. However, in general, attendees will have an opportunity to compare their RCSA practices and exchange ideas to improve efficiency for obtaining more comprehensive and relevant. Additional topics will likely include:

  • Strategy Discussions: RCSA & Operational Excellence
  • Tactical Implementation - Key Steps, Successes, and Pitfalls
  • Regulatory Expectations and Feedback
  • Convergence, Data, Analytics & Reporting - Current Efforts and Path Forward
  • Current Emerging Risks
  • Making it Sustainable
  • Control Testing
  • Automation

The target audience includes management-level professionals working in risk and control assessments. For more event details or to register for the next published event, see our Event Calendar.  For questions, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org

Third-Party Risk Management Roundtable

Third-party risk management continues to be an area of heightened supervisory focus.   Increasing dependence on third-party relationships exposes financial institutions to new and serious risk and compliance issues, so minimizing exposure to financial, legal, regulatory, operational, and reputational risk is more critical than ever.

Financial institutions need to keep in mind that by hiring third parties, they do not outsource the risk. It is important to have proper due diligence and oversight processes in place as third parties are subject to the same cyber and many other risks banks face. Since 2014, RMA hosts peer-sharing sessions to help SMEs find ways to mitigate risks associated with third-party risk management.

This peer-sharing event is designed for the financial services Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) and third-party risk management directors. It provides an opportunity to share best practices, technologies, challenges, and solutions for vendors and non-vendors.

Each RMA peer-sharing event agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by the event’s steering committee (peer banks) and the attendee’s recommendations in advance of the meeting. However, topics will likely include:

  • Current Observations and Trends
  • Evolving Practices and Challenges
  • Solutions for Workload Management
  • Assessments and Oversights of Fourth and Nth Parties
  • Emerging Risks (e.g., cyber, climate, cloud, resiliency)
  • Recent Regulatory Focus

This event is held twice a year. The target audience includes directors and management-level professionals working in third-party (procurement or vendor management) or third-party oversight.  If interested in attending, please email ORMERM@rmahq.org for consideration.

Technology Risk Forum

Technology is embedded in every business process today and protecting sensitive information is required for all banks. During this forum, participants will share leading practices and tools that other institutions and risk managers can use to help effectively and efficiently assess technology risks and threats and prepare for a technology risk event.

This roundtable offers a valuable opportunity to meet and discuss these challenges with your peers and identify best practices you can leverage at your institution to mitigate technology risks and improve risk frameworks. A unique feature of RMA’s Roundtables is that each event agenda is a bit different, as the agenda is driven by a steering committee with your peers and with the attendee’s recommendations. However, topics will likely include:

  • Improving the clarity of roles and responsibilities between technology and risk teams
  • Learn various approaches to perform and prioritize technology-related risk assessments
  • Preparing for emerging threats or disruptions, while mounting a suitable response

  • Key metrics and reporting
