Karen Bjelland

My first interaction with RMA was in the mid-1980s while I served as a credit analyst with First Bank System, now US Bancorp. I recall attending my first Siouxland Chapter meeting in Sioux Falls, SD, as a guest of my credit partners.

Early in my career, I attended various continuing education courses, e.g. Commercial Loan Documentation, Lending to Medical and Dental Practices, and Negotiating Skills for Bankers. Upon my move to South Carolina, I looked for a local chapter and located a long-time supporter and advocate of the Upper South Carolina RMA Chapter. I quickly became involved in leadership roles, including Chapter President, followed by Carolinas-Virginias Chapter President, and then on to lead the Chapter and Membership Council, a position in which I continue to serve.

In co-sponsoring relevant RMA courses with experienced instructors in our local market, our chapter was able to further enhance RMA’s value proposition to existing members—reducing travel time and expense, while providing comprehensive and timely instruction. The courses also expose non-members to RMA and its benefits which enhance the membership base of our organization.

Several drivers have influenced my continued involvement with RMA, including engagement with our member community, role and reputation as an industry leader, promotion of best practices and practical application, expertise across the entire continuum of risk, and the endless potential for professional growth.

Additionally, RMA’s many resources have supplemented my career over the past 29 years, including The RMA Journal, white papers, “lending to” articles, etc. Today, I continue to benefit from having a trusted group with which to share best practices—one of the reasons RMA remains a viable and critical part of our industry.”
